Zaks Work Experience Days 1 and 2 looking from the outside in.
My name is Zak and I’m a Transition Year student doing my work experience here at VOTN.
On my first day I was told to be at Bray dart station where Paul would pick me up. After a few phone calls and a cross over the bridge I eventually found him.
We drove about 10 minutes until we reached Commscopes Irish headquarters, we took all of the equipment in from the car and got given our visitors passes. As we unpacked, Paul showed me what all the equipment was for and we got set up. I helped with the lights, the cameras, and the background. Paul then showed me how to use the camera. I learned how to white balance, focus and change the general settings to what was needed. A Commscope worker then came in and did the recording with us. She had to pretend she was talking on a live link like on the news talking to another Commscope worker in America. She had learnt all of her lines off perfectly and was finished within 45 minutes, then we packed up the equipment and headed for the office.
At the office I was shown the basics in editing with Paul. He was editing a piece done with Josh van der Flier. John then showed me his various gadgets like the drone and the self balancing handheld camera.
On day 2, John and Brian picked me up at Red Cow luas station and we drove to Carton House in Maynooth. Carton House is where the Irish rugby team stay and train during the 6 nations and other tournaments. When we arrived we walked up to the pitch where the first team and the u20s would be training. We were filming a piece on Irish rugby performance director and former Australian international David Nucifora. It was so surreal seeing all of the players in the flesh like Devin Toner and Jonny Sexton, they’re a lot bigger in real life then on tv.. We set ourselves up in a meeting room upstairs and got all of our equipment ready and waited for the training to be over. We interviewed David for about 20 minutes and then headed back to the office to edit.
